Raise a Reef

ECRC is proud to offer this action pack focusing on both natural coral reefs and artificial reefs in cooperation with Artificial Reefs, Inc. of Pensacola, Florida. "Raise a Reef" offers both simulations with few materials needed and classroom aquarium simulations utilizing miniature artificial reef towers like those deployed by Artificial Reefs, Inc. All simulations challenge participants to consider the science behind ocean reefs and the science developed in the use of artificial reef towers.

The Action Pack begins with dramatic actions allowing participants to act our life and death on a reef. The drama continues with a "Who Dunnit?" mystery play including a cast of characters denying their involvement in the death of Perry Perch and jury of peer fishes who will decide who dunnit. Next, the Action Pack changes completely and offers complex observations to be accomplished in a marine aquarium. The miniature towers of matching Artificial Reefs Inc.'s scientifically engineered products are used to examine food water movements through the towers, to consider the impact of the towers on beach erosion and to examine niche creation by marine animals when the towers are located in a marine aquarium. When fully implemented, "Raise a Reef" explores the study of ocean reefs with the rare combination of drama and hands on biotype aquarium building. All actions are unforgettable and motivating experiences.
