Lion Cove yellows

Our group wanted to move all of the Electric Yellows to one tank in Lime Kiln Middle School’s assistant principal’s office. There were Electric Yellows in three different tanks, with other species of fish with them.

In the assistant principal’s office, there were Convict Cichlids and Electric Yellows. We had to take the Convicts out and put them into a temporary ~10 gallon tank. This was challenging, because those fish are small and quick, and we had never moved fish before.

Once the Convicts were in their temporary home, we moved to the huge 150 gallon tank in the school lobby. There were easily 6 different species of fish in that tank. We had to remove everything except the fish and the water to be able to get the Yellows out. It took us a while, but we finally got all of the rocks and plants out. Now the real challenge began: catching only the Yellows. There were ~20 of them in there, ranging from tiny to maximum size. After they were caught and put in a bucket, we had to place everything back into the aquarium.

The Lion Cove Yellow is a cichlid that originates from Lake Malawi in the East African Rift valley. They grow to be approximately 5 inches long, and are generally very peaceful fish. The common name for these fish is “Electric Yellow” for their bright coloring. These particular cichlids are omnivores, meaning they eat both vegetation and meat.
